The Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center was founded at the University of Colorado Denver by the Colorado Legislature in 1973 to provide a permanent research and treatment facility for blood clotting disorders. Until that time, the internal bleeding of hemophilia caused crippled joints, limited the ability to attend school or maintain employment, and often resulted in early death. The establishment of this Center created the means through which significant strides have been made in the treatment of these disorders.
The Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center has become an international leader in the development and implementation of the treatments that have radically improved the quality of life for people living with bleeding disorders.
Our hope for the future is that the development of gene therapy will free people with bleeding disorders from the need for continuous treatment. Until that time the services and programs provided at the Center allows people with bleeding disorders to live more healthy and active lives
The thrombophilia team is comprised of adult hematologist, Dr. Kathryn Hassell, pediatric hematologist, Dr. Marilyn Manco-Johnson, and nurse practitioners KC Knapp-Clevenger, RNC, MSN and Ruth Ann Kirschman, RNC. The treatment center staff and the staffs of the Hematology Departments at The Children’s Hospital and University of Colorado Hospital are also integral parts of the team.
As part of the Hemophilia Treatment Centers, some of the same staff of the UCDHTC also provide care and service to patients who have clotting disorders which have, or may in the future, result in blood clots somewhere in the circulatory system.
